And while we appreciated the burly wheels with pillowy 28-millimeter tires, their heft was noticeable-a change to a lighter set would drop two pounds. "Brands are now thinking outside of the box and finding exciting ways to reinvent the bike. And one brand, BMC, has taken it a step further in its pursuit for the ultimate race frame. For them it required a complete change in the way a frame was made. The best race frames are constructed from carbon fiber, but BMC felt that the current manufacturing methods limited the material's potential because it couldn't be 100% controlled with zero error. To achieve their objective of zero error, it would require the use of computer-controlled robots and a completely new method of production. It wasn't easy, but after four years of development, they created the Impec."
